Magic and Wonder

"The moment one gives close attention to anything,

even a blade of grass,

it becomes a mysterious, awesome,

indescribably magnificent world in itself."

~Henry Miller

This morning after class, I took myself to see the Chihuly exhibit at the Biltmore. It is due to leave on 2/2 and I am so glad that I made the last minute effort to get there. It was an experience of magic and wonder!

We studied Chihuly when I was an art major in college in the 1980’s and I was enchanted by his work then. Years later I met the man himself at an art opening of his work in DC.

It was great today to see this show as there was a retrospective element to the arrangements of the work. I took a bunch of photos. I was particularly struck by the reflections of the work throughout the show. Some of the reflections were due to the lighting and shadows cast on the walls but much of the work was arranged on a floor of mirrors, as in the photo above.

I love how the presence of these reflections not only invite us to give our close attention to the work but help us to see the objects in a new way and remind us to look at everything else with new eyes! And as the quote above says, it becomes a mysterious, awesome, indescribably magnificent world in itself.
